This can differ for everyone. It can depend on:
What you’re coming to therapy for
How long the concern has been going on for
How often you attend sessions (weekly or biweekly is recommended based on research for best results especially in the beginning)
How much time you have outside of sessions to work on things
Some folks attend therapy for a few months’ others for a few years
This is something that can be super helpful to discuss in a consultation to create a solid plan to work towards with the time and resources available to you!

In a first session it is our first time getting to know each other, we go over some important information pertaining to administration and confidentially. Then there will be space to ask any questions, and I’ll also ask some questions to gather some information to be able to support you well. We will have some time to unpack and fully understand what has brought you into therapy. Sometimes leaving with some new thoughts, information, and often a better sense of what we plan to work on together.

Today there seems to be more and more of us. It is so important to find someone you feel okay to talk openly with, someone who you feel you can connect to and feel safe.
Here are some further things to consider:
Do they mention working with the challenges I’m facing
Are they registered
Do I feel more comfortable with men or women when I need support
When I have the consultation with a counsellor, how do I feel during or after?
Also doing consultations are always helpful to getting a better sense of whether or not you and the therapist may be a good fit and they are often free
